There's a place in the South Pacific so removed from civilization that the International Space Station, hovering 250 miles above, feels practically next door compared to the nearest dry land β a staggering 1,600 miles in any direction.
They call it Point Nemo, the oceanic pole of inaccessibility, and standing at its coordinates (if you could stand on water) you'd be more isolated than any human on Earth. No shipping routes pass through. No islands break the horizon. The silence is so complete that it's almost loud.
It's this very emptiness that made space agencies take notice. Point Nemo doubles as a spacecraft graveyard, where decommissioned satellites, cargo vessels, and even the storied Mir space station have been guided down in controlled crashes. When something has to fall from the sky, this is where it lands β in the one place on Earth guaranteed to be empty.
Not every travel destination has a welcoming committee. Some are just coordinates and a story. Point Nemo is both.
